Zebra look

Step-by-step instructions

Watch out – this wall is going to be much talked about!

Whether you opt for concrete grey or other colours, this zebra look is guaranteed to add pizazz to the walls of your home.

And the great thing about this design is that there is no need to measure or mask areas, making it perfect for decorating novices.

We opted for Strukturvlies Basic 401 textured nonwoven wallpaper base surface to lend more depth and sophistication to the zebra look, but, of course, any other Erfurt wallpaper is also ideal for this creative design.

List of tools

1. Measure the wall to be wallpapered and transfer the dimensions to the wallpaper.

2. Cut the lengths of wallpaper to size.

3. Brush the paste onto the back of the wallpaper and hang the wallpaper vertically on the wall. You can also use the paste-the-wall technique and apply paste directly to the wall. Place the wallpaper dry into the bed of paste.

4. Use a dry brush to lightly brush the wallpaper to smooth out any air bubbles under the wallpaper. When applying the lengths of wallpaper, make sure that the lengths are hung edge to edge, and do not overlap or leave gaps (butt jointed).

5. Once the wallpaper is dry, apply a coat of primer. We opted for white primer to create a clean look. Before painting, use masking tape and film to protect the skirting and floor.

6. You can start with the zebra design as soon as the primer has dried.

Stir the concrete grey paint and pour it into a paint tray, then paint the zebra stripes. You can also roughly sketch them on in advance if you wish. Wherever you need the colour to be opaque, apply the paint crosswise to ensure that the paint is evenly distributed. We used a dry paint roller to roll over the edges of our stripes to create a softer transition, showing off the texture of the wallpaper to best advantage.

7. Use a small roller to paint stripes that merge at a point or use a bristle brush to correct them.

All that is left to do is allow the paint to dry and you can then add your furniture.
