1. First, get your materials ready.

2. Use a spirit level and a long ruler to draw the straight vertical lines of the shapes in pencil. You will need a total of 4 vertical lines starting at floor level – 3 at the same height, for the two arches, and one slightly higher for the blue rectangle.

3. We will be working with a homemade compass to draw the round part of the arch. Simply attach one end of a string to a nail. Measure the exact horizontal centre of the central arched pillar and hammer the nail into the wall.

4. Now tighten the thread and fasten the pencil at the level of the left or right edge of the arched pillar. Use the homemade compass to draw the arch between the left and right sides of the pillar. Always keep the thread tight.

5. From the hole of the nail, draw a line vertically upwards at the same height as the outer right line. This will form the left-hand edge of the blue rectangle.

6. Now tie the pencil at the level of the left-hand edge of the outer rear arched pillar (horizontal line on the very left), and then also draw an arch here to the edge of the blue rectangle. Draw a straight horizontal line to close the top edge of the blue rectangle. You should now be able to see all the shapes drawn in pencil on the wall.

7. Now we need to mask the blue rectangle. To do this, simply position the masking tape outside the separating lines. As it is difficult to mask curves with masking tape, we recommend using a Stanley knife to go over the edge afterwards. This will create a perfectly rounded edge.

8. Paint the transitions between the wall and masking tape with a little bit of paint and let it dry. This will ensure that the edges are clean when you remove the masking tape.

9. Then apply the blue paint. Remove the masking tape once the paint has dried.

10. Then mask the outer arch shape, as described above, and paint the edges with a little bit of white paint.

11. You can now paint the arch shape. Remove the masking tape once it has dried.

12. Finally, mask the inner arch shape and use the Stanley knife to clean up the edges.

13. Then paint the inner shape as described above. Remove the remaining masking tape.

14. You can then use a small paintbrush to touch up any small areas.

Tip: Shapes in the same colour can also blend wonderfully with each other and are even easier to make. All you need to do is buy one colour of paint and then lighten it up with white paint for each shape. Or what about geometric shapes in shades of blue, green or pink?
